City anticipates line painting on Kamloops streets to wrap up by the end of June

KAMLOOPS — There have been weather delays and supply chain disruptions to deal with, but the City of Kamloops says progress is being made on line painting this month.

Most of the crosswalks and other specialty markings on the streets have been completed now, but Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow says there are still lines on several major roadways to finish up.

“The big challenge with line-painting is we sweep, we crack seal, we do all that work in advance of putting down the lines. And that takes two or three months to do that type of work. It often puts us into the May or June window,” explains Farrow. “This particular year, we’re bumping up near the end of June, but we’re anticipating all the long lines will be completed by the end of the month.”

Line painting was slowed by a worldwide paint shortage, along with cooler temperatures and spring rainfall in Kamloops. In recent years, Farrow says the paint used by the City has also changed for eco-friendly standards set by the province and the federal government, so it doesn’t last as long.

If the weather cooperates, Farrow says a lot of the work left should be tackled this week.

“Right now, we have Van Horne, Howe, Hugh Allen, Pacific Way, Aberdeen Drive, Tranquille Road. A lot of those ones are already completed. And the focus truly in the next couple of days are some of those two-lane arterials, where the white centre line is missing in a lot of cases.”

As work nears completion this month, residents are reminded to give crews plenty of space while they’re painting.
