KAMLOOPS — On Father’s Day (June 19), the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association held its free family fishing day at Walloper Lake.

To kick off the summer fishing season, free family fishing weekend events were held all over the province.

Families from across B.C. were able to take part in free fishing events over the weekend, with the goal to introduce children and others to the art of fishing.

At Walloper Lake, people were able to fish, learn and socialize with participants who range from avid anglers to those trying the sport for the very first time.

Participant Angela Matthews was excited to see her children fish for the first time.

“Our kids have never been fishing. This is a great way to try it and everyone here is so friendly and set us up with all the gear. We caught a couple of fish, even!”

Catching a fish for the first time is an experience most people should have according to the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Association’s Dave Helmer.

“It’s exciting to see kids catch their first fish ever and also to those kids that have been fishing already, they get excited getting back on the water, catching fish and enjoying themselves.”

Matthews and her son Reid caught their first fish on Sunday (June 19), adding that she thinks helping children learn a new sport and activity is vital for growing up.

“I think any way you can help kids learn to love to be outside, I think you’re setting them up and they’ll be able to learn what hobbies they love — hopefully, have a lifelong appreciation for all for this area has to offer.”

Participants shared laughs, hot chocolate, hot dogs and created memories on Sunday catching their first fish.
