South Thompson River upgraded to a flood watch, joining North Thompson and other Interior rivers

KAMLOOPS — The South Thompson River joined the North Thompson on the flood watch list Sunday (June 19) at 1 p.m.

The B.C. River Forecast (BCRFC) said rivers in the region are flowing very high for this time of year.

“An upcoming major concern is the weather forecast for a potential long‐ lasting rain event in the headwaters of the South Thompson, North Thompson and Cariboo Mountains beginning late Tuesday through Wednesday,” said the bulletin on the BCRFC website.

“If widespread heavy rainfall occurs, rivers will reach the highest level of the season and it’s possible for significant flooding to occur.”

The centre predicts that due to rainfall, the North Thompson could reach a 20-year to 50-year flow and the South Thompson could reach a 10-year flow later this week.

A flood watch is being maintained for the Shuswap region and Cariboo region, and a high streamflow advisory remains for Thompson River from Kamloops to Spence’s Bridge and Nicola River.
