COLLINS: “A decline in civility” is a major understatement

Jun 19, 2022 | 6:52 AM

IT MIGHT BE the biggest understatement of the year.

The City of Kamloops said it was going to shut down the comments section of its website. The reason said the City, was a “decline in civility”.

While some will be upset, it is the right decision.

It’s one thing to argue your point in a civil manner, to point out the things you think should happen and how we get from A to B. It’s quite another to see the comments that are hateful, threatening and downright scary.

Some people just think it’s okay to say whatever they want with no consequences, and they are definitely wrong about that.

You can be angry without threatening people. Intimidation tactics are misplaced when people want change.

One online group is talking about going to City Hall on council days. If they’re going just to disrupt things, then their ignorance should be returned with charges and a hefty fine.

Jerks that do that kind of thing are no different than the extremist groups in the U.S.

Social media is getting to the point where it’s outlived its usefulness. And Elon Musk is just adding fuel to the fire if his plans for Twitter go ahead. If people can say anything they want then it’s time to step away from it.

Society needs a return to civility, not a step away from it.

Whatever your excuse for your anger, use it to provide the groundwork to make positive steps instead of going backward like many of these people are doing.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
