SUN PEAKS, B.C. — In a normal year, people would be riding down the Sun Peaks Resort on their mountain bikes in warm weather. This year, however, people are snowshoeing.

The resort decided they would turn on the Sunburst chairlift and let the guests and visitors head up the mountain to explore the snow.

“It actually kind of came up as a joke a few weeks ago that we could probably open on June 17 for snowshoeing and everybody laughed, and here we are and pulled that product together and I was actually really excited to see people going up this morning and getting a lap of the trail that we have marked up top,” says Rob McCloskey, Sun Peaks Resort Director of Marketing.

Colin Cannon with Discover Sun Peaks Adventure says this is a weird start to summer where people are snowshoeing in June and he wanted to help out.

“The issue is they couldn’t get the snow off the bike trails and hiking trails so they wanted something for people to do and wondered if I could come up and build a couple of trails in the top of the Sunburst chairlift for people to snowshoe. Middle of June. Totally crazy but the amount of people I’ve seen already and this is Friday morning we just opened at 10. Unbelievable.”

McCloskey added that the tourists have come from all over.

“To be honest, quite a few more snowshoers are going up than I expected to see — which is awesome. Still going up Midday. It’s great to see people going up and taking advantage. We have some international guests here making the most of their summer here in Canada by snowshoeing in late June.”

Scott Atherly travelled from California to Canada and says he didn’t assume snow would be on the ground at this time of the year.

“Snowshoeing in June is something that I didn’t expect when we came up here to spend a week. I expected to be on a bicycle today and do some of the easier bike runs but this was a welcome experience.”

Joan Mcloud mentioned that guests — including her at the resort — say the snow experience in June has been full of surprises.

“We’ve met a few people in our complex where we’re staying and we’ve all been persuaded to get the snowshoes on and come up here — and why not?”

People interested in snowshoeing at Sun Peaks can do so only until Sunday (June 19) if they want to experience this unique opportunity.
