KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Skydivers club is folding.

In a news release, the organization says it has made the decision to cease operations after failing to secure a landing spot near Kamloops Airport, despite trying for three years.

It notes its previous landing spot has been squeezed out by runway expansion and the construction to twin the nearby Trans Mountain pipeline. Efforts to find another location for a dropzone have failed to bear fruit.

“If they had a place to land, they could continue to operate,” states the release.

Kamloops Skydivers has been operating for more than 60 years, and touts itself as one of the last in the world to operate not as a business but as a non-profit society.

“Some of the best skydivers in the world have come from Kamloops,” the organization said. “Several of their skydivers hold world records and others have attended as high a level as the world championships. They used to host two well-known events per year that drew people from throughout Canada and sometimes around the world to experience what Kamloops had to offer. They had a reputation for being focused on fun, safety and canopy piloting.
