SOUND OFF: Kamloops is catching wedding fever

Jun 12, 2022 | 6:45 AM

FOLLOWING A TWO-YEAR LULL, area wedding rates are increasing dramatically. While the biggest increases have been seen in nearby Kelowna, Infotel.ca report that the province in general has seen a huge 10 per cent increase in the number of weddings taking place, rapidly returning to the pre-pandemic income level of $700 million. Kamloops is catching that fever, and soon enough there’ll be a huge spike in the number of weddings taking place in the city and the amount of celebrations, and planning, taking place.

The jewelry scene

One of the lesser known but most time-honored Kamloops traditions is jewelry-making. As Kamloops Now highlights, the 45-year celebration of Kamloops’ farmer market brings a lot of focus onto local handcrafted jewelry, spanning everything from cutesy local pieces through to stunning pieces of vintage-design classics. As a result, picking up a handcrafted wedding ring is not only easily done in Kamloops, but it’ll have a local vibe, too. Any style can work, depending on the wedding, and that’s where Kamloops excels. The Indigenous history of the area has provided a rich heritage to sensitively draw on, in addition to the many time-honored wedding band trends that have defined the modern wedding scene across the world.

Promoting new venues

In addition to a thriving jewelry scene, Kamloops has a lot to offer in terms of venues. According to local florist Camilla Flowers, some of the best include Bronze — Colombo Lodge, Silver – South Thompson Inn & Conference Center and Gold — Monte Creek Ranch Winery, all of which have opened up their wedding offerings to create an even more iconic day for weddings in the city. There are even more excellent offerings to be had further from the city, of course, but Kamloops is really taking the crown when it comes to high-class wedding venues and backdrops. The big day will come with a great sense of pride and class when hosted in Kamloops.

Good news stories

Not only are the backdrops to weddings in Kamloops providing real food for thought and a pull on to-be-weds in the region, but the actual weddings taking place have taken on a very poignant aspect in recent months. Canada has agreed to broaden immigration rules concerning Ukrainian nationals following the fighting over in Europe, and many families have already arrived in the area to put down new roots. One recent news story on CFJC Today highlighted one such couple, and how tying the knot in Kamloops has provided a new start for Ukrainian families. The city is not hosting just ordinary weddings — the ceremonies going on around the city are conducive to building a better, more inclusive community, for the future.

Kamloops is catching wedding fever. Regional increases in the number of weddings has spread to the city, and not only are the wonderful venues and jewellers providing the goods to make this work, but the weddings themselves are taking on perhaps national importance. As always, Kamloops is setting trends.
