KAMLOOPS — Student absenteeism in School District 73 (SD73) has been identical to historical averages since the provincial mask mandate was dropped.

Reports from Superintendent Rhonda Nixon following the end of Spring Break on April 1 show absenteeism rates from April 4 to May 24.

The figures in the SD73 regular board meeting agendas show daily average absenteeism surpassed the historical average eight times, matched it six times, and was below it 17 times. Nixon reports that one school sent out an absenteeism threshold letter to their community during that tie between April 20 and May 3.

“Throughout May, the District wide daily average student absenteeism has been consistent with the historical average with a mix of days where student absenteeism is below, exceeds or equals the 14 per cent historical average,” Nixon states in the May 30 agenda. “There have been thirteen schools that have experienced at least one day of student absenteeism exceeding their historical average… Many school principals are hearing from parents that students are being kept home from school with non-COVID related illnesses.”

However, teacher absenteeism peaked at 228 on May 6. All but 27 of those positions didn’t have a substitute for the day. Dixon notes period of May 4 to 20 has been the most challenging for teach absenteeism in the school year to date as it reached new highs and didn’t decrease like January.
