Monte Creek-area residents vote to add fire protection

KAMLOOPS — Monte Creek-area residents have spoken out in favour of adding fire protection.

In preliminary results of an assent referendum held Saturday (May 28), 142 of 196 voters (72 per cent) said ‘Yes’ to establishing fire protection service for the areas of Monte Creek, Del Oro and Lafarge.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says the results must still be certified by the Chief Election Officer.

The vote came nearly one year after a house fire along Hook Road in Monte Creek took a man’s life. The Pritchard Volunteer Fire Department responded to that fire, but only after obtaining permission from the TNRD as the location was outside of its jurisdiction.

If the referendum results are confirmed, Monte Creek, Del Oro and Lafarge will be served by a new volunteer department, including a hall and truck. The TNRD will borrow $1.25 million to fund the up-front costs, with a project annual operating budget of $175,000.
