KAMLOOPS — BC Hydro will begin replacing light bulbs in street lights in parts of Westsyde and downtown on Monday (May 30).

It’s part of a three-year project to replace all high pressure sodium (HPS) lights in the province with LED lights, according to a posting on the City’s website.

The replacement project will begin in downtown, from 10th Avenue to 13th Avenue between Columbia Street and Highway 1. In Westsyde, crews will work from Harrington Road to Green Acres, between Westsyde Road and the North Thompson River, not including Westsyde Road.

The City said the installation is expected have minimal impacts, with the potential of short term lane closures and other traffic control measures while crews work.

Starting later in June, more installations in different communities will begin in phases.

The City said LED lights use less energy and are more sustainable and reliable. They also last longer than traditional HPS lights.

“LED street lights produce a whiter and more natural light than the orange light emitted from the existing street lights, which improves nighttime visibility and will help improve traffic safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians,” the City said in the posting.

The City recommends taking three weeks to adjust to the new lights.

“If after that time, you have an issue with the brightness or positioning of the light, please contact Civic Operations,” said the City.
