KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Coroner’s Service and Worksafe BC are investigating Thursday’s (May 26) ammonia leak at a business in the Mount Paul Industrial Park that left one person dead.

At around 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Kamloops Fire Rescue crews responded to a call for a potential ammonia leak at Arctic Glacier.

Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Cail confirmed when firefighters arrived on scene, the ammonia could be seen escaping the building, resembling smoke.

“It’s a whole other set of training and skills and personal protective equipment required when responding to a hazardous materials release like that,” Cail told CFJC Today. “Thankfully, we’ve got a lot of well-educated trained staff who can mitigate a situation like this. When we arrived, obviously our number one priority was people.”

With the threat to public safety under control, multiple agencies are now working on investigations into the cause of the leak, including Worksafe BC, the coroners office, Technical Safety BC, and the RCMP.

Each agency will be running seperate investigations.

“Looking at the cause of the fatal leak and that sort of thing,” said Cst. Crystal Evelyn of Kamloops RCMP. “For that investigation, we’ve got our Tk’emlups Rural RCMP as well as our Southeast District regional General Investigation Services team who will be looking into all of the factors involved in that investigation.”
