100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Two men were arrested at 108 Mile Ranch after a medical distress situation was misunderstood as a home invasion Tuesday (May 24) evening.

100 Mile House RCMP say they received a report of an older man pointing a gun at another man in an adjacent neighbour’s yard in the 4700-block of Telqua Drive. The man in the neighbour’s yard was screaming for help.

According to RCMP, the older man had also called 9-1-1 himself, indicating he had a weapon pointed at the other man, who he had caught breaking into his neighbour’s house.

Police say there was no break-in or damage to the neighbour’s property. The suspect had left the property and the older man continued to follow him with his gun all the way to the 108 Ranch Heritage Site, more than 500 meters from the original scene. Officers on scene determined this to be a criminal offence and continued their investigation.

Before officers arrived, RCMP say the older man had tossed the gun into the grass. The other man was lying face down in the grass. The suspect man was noted to be extremely intoxicated and appeared to be in medical distress. He was taken to hospital, cleared by hospital staff and placed in cells and later released to his caregiver without charge given the known circumstances.

The older man was released on conditions, including turning over his remaining firearms and ammunition to RCMP, with a later court date. RCMP believe this to be an isolated event and there’s no further risk to the public.
