Investigation underway after Barriere man was shot by RCMP

BARRIERE — BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident where a man was allegedly shot by an officer.

Around 10 p.m. on May 20, 2022, officers from the Barriere RCMP were called to the 2900-block of Highway 5 for a report that a man had been dropped off on the side of the road.

The man reportedly had a weapon on him. Officers then attended the scene and an apparent interaction occurred between the man and officers and shots were fired by police.

The man was injured and no officers were harmed.

BC Emergency Health Services were called as officers performed first aid on the injured man.

He was transported to a nearby hospital but no update has been provided detailing the man’s injuries.

The IIO BC release states they “will be investigating police actions in this incident. While the Southeast District General Investigation Section is conducting a concurrent criminal code investigation. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.”
