SOUND OFF: Celebrating and supporting nurses

May 18, 2022 | 10:46 AM

NURSES ARE WITH US for some of our most important moments. Whether that is welcoming a child into the world or spending final moments with a loved one, nurses are there. National Nursing Week affords us an opportunity to reflect on the skill and dedication of nurses across B.C. and thank them for the incredible service they provide.

The theme of this year’s National Nursing week, from May 9-15, was “We Answer the Call.” Nursing is a diverse field that encompasses many skills and occupations. Nurse practitioners, nurse educators, registered nurses and many others, provide an irreplaceable service to all British Columbians. In my own career as a nurse, I have met truly inspirational people who embody dedication and strength every single day.

This year’s theme also reminds us of the perseverance of nurses across the province over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing toxic drug crisis. This has been an unprecedented challenge for our province and nurses in B.C. did not hesitate to “answer the call.”

Understanding that nurses have faced some enormous challenges over the past few years, I’m excited that our government is finding ways to bring more nurses into the workforce to alleviate some pressure on those who have worked so hard the last few years. To achieve this, we’re adding over 600 nursing seats at colleges and universities, including 25 at Thompson Rivers University. These seats are in addition to the previously existing 2,000 seats province-wide.

We’re also welcoming talent from outside Canada. For too long, internationally educated nurses have had to navigate an unnecessarily lengthy process to work as a nurse in B.C. I know this because I am an internationally educated nurse. When I wanted to practice in B.C. there were no supports available from the government of the day, and it took years for me to be able to pursue my career.

Our New Democrat government is making sure future nurses don’t have to go through the same difficult journey. We’re streamlining the application process and providing bursaries towards the cost of assessments so nurses who trained outside of Canada can get working sooner.

In addition to a lack of support for internationally trained nurses, the previous provincial government chronically underfunded our health care system. As health minister, Kevin Falcon made health authorities absorb $360 million in cuts leading to job losses and putting more strain on nurses while patients waited longer for care. Falcon even welcomed federal cuts to the Canada Health Transfer, even though it meant less services for people in B.C.

Since we took office, we’ve been working to fill those gaps and add more services. B.C. now has the shortest wait times in Canada for hip and knee replacements, and Budget 2022 invests $3.2 billion in additional funding to improve our health care system.

In 2021, we invested $96 million to support our healthcare workforce and expand training opportunities for nurses.

Between 2017 and 2020, there was an overall six per cent increase in registered nurses and a 12 per cent increase in licensed practical nurses in B.C. We have also created 200 new nurse practitioner positions to support patients as part of a shift to a team-based primary care in communities. And in Year 2 of our surgical renewal plan, health authorities trained an additional 400 perioperative nurses and 100 medical-device reprocessing technicians.

The work we’re doing not only supports nurses themselves, but it also helps people across the province get the care they deserve. Everyone benefits from the incredible skill of B.C. nurses.

I know there is more to do and I look forward to continuing to be a voice for nurses in our legislature.

To B.C. nurses: You are life savers. Thank you for the vital work that you do every day. Thank you for answering the call.
