KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Wildfire Service is reporting that the Juniper Knoll wildfire just east of Cache Creek is now under control. The 2.3-hectare grass fire was burning directly alongside the Trans Canada Highway.

Fire Information Officer Shaylee Stearns noted that the fire is believed to be human-caused and that fire origin investigators were on scene Wednesday morning (May 18).

The small blaze is the 111th fire already this year across British Columbia.

“Last night, we had ten B.C. Wildfire Service personnel that deployed to the fire, along with B.C. Hydro and RCMP who were conducting traffic management on scene,” Stearns told CFJC Today Wednesday. “Today, we had fire origin and cause who attended the fire this morning to conduct their investigation and start that process. Later today, we will have six B.C. Wildfire Service personnel out to the fire to finish some patrolling.”

There are currently four active wildfires within the Kamloops Fire Centre, all of which are classified as under control. However, with the May long weekend serving as the unofficial start of summer, Stearns wanted to remind anybody heading out in the back country to be fire smart.

“Kamloops Fire Centre has received less than average amounts of precipitation this spring. It’s a good reminder there is still a possibility for wildfires, just be as cautious as you can when you are out enjoying outdoor activities. Make sure you take the necessary protocols. You can always visit bcwildfire.ca to get the regulations that we have on everything to do with that,” said Stearns.
