TNRD approves film studio location study

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is moving forward with a film studio location study for the region. The regional district has previously completed a feasibility study that confirmed that now is the right time economically to build and that a five-acre property would best fit the community.

The report is expected to be completed by the end of this summer. The location study would then be released to possible investors in the industry in the hopes of attracting existing companies to Kamloops.

Film commissioner Victoria Weller confirmed the TNRD isn’t interesting in partnering with the industry.

“There is not at this point, and I don’t see it in the future, any appetite to do a private-public partnership. The TNRD does not want to be a partner. What we want is to have good studies, vetted by good companies, and reputable companies saying, ‘Here are your options,’ and let the market decide if they want to invest in a study in this area,” stated Weller.

Currently the B.C. chapter of the Directors Guild of Canada is on strike. While current productions can continue, the strike is affecting new projects with Weller confirming some projects have recently chosen Alberta over British Columbia for that reason. The work stoppage is new ground for the longtime film commissioner.

“So far, we are seeing some of them go to Alberta and stay in other jurisdictions or hold off. We might see once it’s settled a surge of productions that need to pick up the pace and get done,” said Weller. “We will see what happens; it’s uncharted territory at this point. So far, we are doing good.”
