Kamloops RCMP officer rescues gosling, prepares it for re-entry into the wild

KAMLOOPS — A gosling in Kamloops is recovering after being rescued by an RCMP officer.

In a news release issued Tuesday (May 17), RCMP say they were called to a local shelter for a report of a woman who had brought a gosling – eventually named ‘Little Jerry’ – back to her room and refused to let it free.

Cst. Crystal Evelyn says the woman denied having the gosling, but its chirps led officers to locating it inside the woman’s pocket.

RCMP say they consulted with the Conservation Officer Service (COS) and attempted to return the gosling to the beach where it had been taken from, but no other geese were present.

Cst. Richard Christy says he talked with the COS before bringing the gosling home for rehabilitation and eventual re-entry into the wild.

“The responding (conservation) officer was worried it would be killed if he just left it there, so I said I’d take it home to my farm. I have a safe place with some chickens, ducks and a pond,” Cst. Christy says.

Anyone who comes across an animal they believe to be abandoned is asked not to touch it and to contact the COS before interfering with wildlife.
