KAMLOOPS — A dangerous drive through Kamloops ended in the Oak Hills area of Westsyde Monday afternoon (May 9) with a driver under arrest.

Scroll down for videos of the incident and arrest.

In a news release, spokesperson Cst. Crystal Evelyn says Kamloops RCMP received a report of an erratic driver at about 12:30 p.m. Monday. The vehicle in question was a grey BMW with no license plates.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled. Police then laid out a spike belt on Halston Avenue just off Highway 5. While the belt successfully punctured two tires, the driver continued to drive aggressively, leading officers to break off their pursuit in the interest of public safety.

Evelyn says covert units monitored the vehicle as it continued through the city. Eventually, marked officers tried to stop it again. In the attempt, the vehicle fled again, colliding with a police cruiser and entering Oak Hills.

“With the assistance of the Kamloops RCMP Targeted Enforcement Unit and the General Investigative Services Team, officers were able to discreetly keep an eye on the vehicle in the safest way possible, until the driver eventually stopped and exited,” said Evelyn. “As soon as the suspect got out, officers and the Police Dog Services Unit moved in and took the man into custody, preventing his drive from resuming.”

Evelyn says a nearby independent school was placed on hold-and-secure even though it was a professional development day.

Evelyn notes no one was injured, including the officer whose vehicle was involved in the collision.

The driver is still in custody with numerous charges being contemplated.

Anyone with further information or dashcam footage is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2022-15278.
