Reported COVID-19 infections down in Interior Health

VICTORIA — Interior Health saw overall COVID-19 figures fall on a week-to-week basis in the latest report from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

The weekly update showed that between April 24 and 30 there were 526 new cases of COVID-19 in the Interior, 55 new hospital admissions related to the virus, and 15 deaths linked to COVID.

Those figures were down from the 575 cases, 75 hospitalizations and 19 deaths the previous week.

Locally, Kamloops had 91 cases reported last week. There were six infections in the South Cariboo, ten in 100 Mile House, four in Merritt and 14 in two in the North Thompson. Greater Vernon had 57 reported cases last week, with seven in Armstrong-Spallumchen, four in Enderby, 14 in Salmon Arm and 154 in the Central Okanagan. See map of all B.C. communities here.

The weekly report shows that B.C. as a whole had 2,283 new cases in the last week of April, up slightly from the 2,269 cases the week prior. Fraser Health had the highest concentration of new cases with 867, followed by Interior Health’s 526.

Hospitalizations were down across the province. In the last week of April, there were 375 British Columbians admitted to hospital with the virus, down from the 418 the week before. The report showed Fraser Health also had the highest concentration of new hospitalizations with 157, followed by Vancouver Coastal Health at 90, then Interior Health.

The number of British Columbians who died due to COVID-19 in the last week of April was recorded at 50, down from the 66 the week before. Interior Health and Vancouver Island Health had the highest number of deaths, as both recorded 15.

To date there have been 365,577 COVID-19 cases and 3,002 deaths recorded across the province. Of those, 64,991 cases and 367 deaths were recorded in the Interior.
