Kamloops Airport reports full staff as others struggle

KAMLOOPS — As COVID-19 restrictions on travel continue to ease, Canadians are beginning to return to their pre-pandemic ways. Airports are starting to get busy, with more travellers passing through the gates.

As bigger airports across the country report staffing challenges, Kamloops Airport is rolling with its full complement of staff, even as flights increase this month.

Managing Director Ed Ratuski says the airport has met its goal of having a fully-staffed security department.

“We’ve been working really closely with CATSA (Canadian Air Transport Security Authority), and ensuring that they were well staffed up well in advance. We don’t see the passenger levels they do at the major airports but it is increasing and we are recovering. As of May 1, we have added additional frequencies to Vancouver and Calgary everyday,” said Ratuski.

Kamloops Airport is currently at about 60 to 65 per cent of 2019 passenger levels with numbers continuing to increase month after month. Management is also involved in ongoing conversations with potential new service providers.

“Coming out of the pandemic there may be new opportunities with new domestic destinations. We are working with Tourism Kamloops, Tourism Sun Peaks, and the community in general to get the services that suit the community,” added Ratuski.
