KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops councillor will not be seeking re-election ahead of the 2022 B.C. municipal elections.

In a social media post Wednesday (May 4) morning, Kathy Sinclair wrote that she is prioritizing her health, friendships, and family.

“This decision has not come easily,” Sinclair wrote. “Serving on council includes many joys and opportunities: interacting with dozens of community organizations and hundreds of citizens, working alongside talented and motivated people, and learning the inner workings of local government among them. Being an elected official also comes with challenges… I have every faith that good people will run for – and be elected to – Kamloops City Council this fall.”

Sinclair was elected to council in a byelection in 2017, receiving 3,421 votes, the most out of the 21 candidates. She won re-election in the 2018 municipal election with 10,806 votes, the second most out of 21 candidates.

Sinclair’s decision means Kamloops will have at least three new councillors following the 2022 election. The seats occupied by current councillors Dieter Dudy and Arjun Singh will be up for grabs as they both announced their intentions to run for Kamloops’ mayoral seat. Mayor Ken Christian previously announced he would not be seeking re-election in 2022.

Kamloops voters will go to the polls Oct. 15.
