KAMLOOPS — Volunteers with the annual Spring Rotary Food Drive collected 26 tons of food donations.

Bernadette Siracky, executive director of the Kamloops Food Bank, told CFJC Today that the final weigh in of donations was 52,000 pounds.

Trucks and vans full of yellow bags pulled into the warehouse on the North Shore and dozens of volunteers unloaded and sorted the goods.

Siracky said the Kamloops Food Bank was on a “rollercoaster” during the pandemic.

“What we experienced here is that many folks were faced with a financial situation that was not their making, and they definitely struggled with meeting the basic needs of their family, including rent and food and gas,” she said. “Many people lost their jobs, even for a short period of time, and had to use some savings.”

She said many people were first-time users of the food bank over the past two years.

“They had a new understanding of what we did and a new respect, honestly, for the folks that needed to use our service,” said Siracky.

“What we’re seeing today is people just giving back and knowing that it could be them in our line up.”
