Royal Inland Hospital to operate at 50 per cent nursing staff complement this weekend: source

KAMLOOPS — It may be a difficult weekend for staff at Royal Inland Hospital.

An anonymous source with knowledge of the situation tells CFJC Today that staffing is severely depleted this weekend — at about 50 per cent of normal nursing complements.

CFJC Today has agreed to grant anonymity to the source, as the source fears there will be consequences for speaking publicly on the issue.

The source says the hospital has been routinely operating with about 60-to-70 per cent of its normal nursing capacity, but 50 per cent is extreme.

The source notes auxiliary care aides will be able to assist, but their numbers are also short.

According to the source, burnout is a major factor in the staff shortage.

In an email to CFJC Today, Interior Health confirms there are no planned service interruptions at RIH over the weekend, but a spokesperson said staffing numbers could not be confirmed until Monday.
