KAMLOOPS — Around 150 people walked in support of the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism Saturday (April 30).

Current students, graduates, parents and grandparents were decked out in blue as they walked around McArthur Island Park for the 11th annual Walk for Autism.

The centre works with school-aged children with autism to help them build the skills needed to participate in school. They work with the children in occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and music therapy.

“Those therapies are really to work on some of those areas that may be difficult for an individual who has ASD,” said Wanda Carisse, executive director of the centre.

“For some of our folks, the sensory system is so disruptive that they’re not able to take part in day to day activities, so we want to work on those skills so ultimately they can go to school.”

The money raised will go towards speech and music therapy for the students.

“For some of our folks with ASD, communication is a huge deficit. [Music therapy can give them] a form of communication where they can express themselves, and in some cases … understand language and some social skills that we work on,” said Carisse.
