KAMLOOPS — Nearly one year after a devastating house fire claimed a man’s life in Monte Creek, local residents will vote on whether to fund fire protection for the community.

A referendum on fire protection service is set for Saturday, May 28. Eligible residents within the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s Areas P and L can vote.

If the referendum passes, residents of the Monte Creek, Del Oro and Lafarge areas would be served by a new fire department. That would require the construction of a fire hall, purchase of a fire truck and firefighting equipment, and the recruitment of a team of volunteer firefighters. The TNRD is proposing to borrow $1.25 million to fund the up-front costs, with annual operating costs of $175,000.

Advance voting will take place on Wednesday, May 18 at the TNRD headquarters in Kamloops. On the general voting day of May 28, voting will take place at the B.C. Livestock office on Dallas Drive.
