Second human bone found near Kamloops Airport; DNA analysis underway

KAMLOOPS — A second human bone has been discovered near Kamloops Airport, deepening a mystery that began a month ago.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cst. Crystal Evelyn says the second bone was discovered by a hiker and their dog on April 9, two weeks after the first was discovered along Rivers Trail.

Evelyn says it’s believed the two bones are related, but that won’t be confirmed until the B.C. Coroners Service completes an analysis.

“Due to the proximity of the bones, it is suspected the two are related, but we won’t know for certain until a DNA analysis is completed,” said Evelyn.

Since the first bone was located on March 26, a thorough examination of the area has been completed by the Police Dog Services Unit, Kamloops Search and Rescue, RCMP Human Remains Detection dogs, along with RCMP Air Services and the local police boat. Evelyn says the search failed to turn up any further items of significance.

“We have to take things one step at a time. Right now, that first step was searching the area and seeing if there was anything else in the area of significance. That has been done extensively and nothing further has turned up,” said Evelyn. “Now, the next step is waiting until that DNA analysis is completed so we can see — even though they’re suspected — if [the two bones] are actually related.”

“If somebody was out recently walking their dog — even before the first bone was found — and they found something that they think may be related, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know, because you don’t know what’s significant and what’s not.”

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and quote file number 2022-11538.
