COLLINS: Who can you trust?

Apr 24, 2022 | 6:58 AM

APPARENTLY, YOU CAN’T TRUST anyone in our society these days.

The other day, I took a quick survey of headlines, including CFJCToday.com, Kamloops This Week, CBC, Canadian Press, Vancouver Sun, Global TV and others.

These were some of those headlines.

  • Anglican Church’s national bishop to Indigenous members resigns over ‘acknowledged’ sexual misconduct
  • Senior soldier once tasked with army command retired while facing sexual misconduct probe
  • Former top commander Vance acknowledges sexual relationship with subordinate in court document
  • B.C. teacher loses licence after pursuing relationships with new grads
  • Nunavut cabinet minister resigns post over integrity commissioner report
  • Corruption in Canada worst in a decade, finds international watchdog

These are just headlines, and in some cases, they may refer to charges that have not been proven in court.

But does the sheer number of disturbing headlines worry anyone other than me?

We talk a lot about transparency, but a recent report indicates Canada has slipped further down the corruption scale.

Most of these headlines refer to sexual transgressions, but some refer to integrity and some to money schemes.

So how do you know who you can trust to listen to you if you have something to report?

According to the headlines you can’t trust your church, your teacher, business executives, parliamentarians, your friends, and in some sad cases, your parents.

I think we all believe we can trust most people, but it’s getting harder to know who that one bad apple is who can destroy your trust, take your life’s savings, sexually mistreat you, or cost you your job.

I have been reading quite a bit recently about sex trafficking, and how cartels, gangs and others lure women into that trade. And once they’re in, being force-fed by drugs to keep them compliant. Many never get out.

It’s one of the tragedies in our “happy” world that these girls are often abused by high rollers who profess to be such bastions of integrity.

You can’t live a happy and comfortable life by not trusting someone. It’s just that finding that person is getting more and more difficult.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
