BC Housing, Kamloops sign memorandum of understanding on housing projects and shelters
KAMLOOPS — BC Housing has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the City of Kamloops to formally commit to work together on future housing projects and shelters, as announced in a news release Tuesday (April 12).
Through the MOU, BC Housing commits to providing letters of intent to Kamloops city council when proposing new housing projects. They also commit to supporting housing operators to build relationships with residents and business owners to address concerns related to shelter or housing operations.
In exchange, the City will complete a land-use analysis this year to identify areas to use as shelters. They’ll also support BC Housing, when needed, to navigate the municipal approval process for future shelter and housing projects. The City will also provide financial support for BC Housing projects through tax exemptions, waiving of development cost charges or by making donations from the City’s Affordable Housing Reserve when possible.
“Through this MOU, we have strengthened our commitment to work together to end homelessness, provide affordable homes, foster collaboration in research and community messaging and provide the help needed in our community to help shelter all residents in a safe and secure environment,” said Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian.
