B.C. Coroners Service reports 174 more overdose deaths in February; five in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — There is good news and bad news in the most recent illicit drug overdose death data from the B.C. Coroners Service.

On the positive side, B.C. has broken its streak of consecutive months seeing 200 or more illicit drug deaths, registering 174 in February.

However, that is still the highest total ever for the month of February, one more than February of 2021.

Kamloops saw five more overdose deaths in February for a year-to-date total of 16, tying the city with Prince George for fifth-most in B.C.

The Coroners Service says Thompson-Nicola is one of the Health Service Delivery Areas with the highest rates of overdose death in B.C., and Local Health Areas with the highest rates include Merritt, Enderby, Lillooet and the North Thompson.

Of all overdose deaths recorded in B.C. so far in 2022, 86 per cent took place indoors.
