The City of Kamloops resumes Volunteer Appreciation BBQ after two-year hiatus

KAMLOOPS — After a two-year hiatus, the City of Kamloops is bringing back the Annual Volunteer Appreciation BBQ event, which is set to take place Friday, April 22 from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm.

The event will be held at the Sandman Centre Plaza at 300 Lorne Street. It’s also an unofficial kickoff to National Volunteer Week, which gets underway the following Monday, April 24.

Mayor Ken Christian is pleased to welcome Kamloops volunteers back to this event.

“Upwards of 300 people volunteer for the City of Kamloops in various capacities, so it’s just our chance to give back to them in a small way,” Christian says. “The Lion’s Club comes out and we have a barbecue, some giveaways, that kind of thing. [It’s] an opportunity just to share and learn from [the volunteers] about their volunteer experiences.”

One group that has gone above and beyond in the past few years has been the Emergency Support Services volunteers who have helped out during the wildfires in the summer and the floods this fall. Those volunteers alone logged more than 25,000 hours in 2021.

“Those weren’t east hours. Those were very difficult assignments, dealing with a lot of stress and pressures and uncertainty, And yet they really proved their worth and made Kamloops shine, in terms of their commitment to our community. This is just a chance for us to recognize them, amongst other organizations.”
