Kamloops residents invited to help clean up McDonald Park

KAMLOOPS — The McDonald Park Neighbourhood Association (MPNA) is inviting the community to help with a community garden revitalization project starting Sunday (April 10).

The MPNA is starting with a work bee event on Sunday. Residents are welcome to drop by between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to help weed, trim bushes, lay gravel and repair garden boxes. They say no gardening experience is required and all ages are welcome.

Greg Unger, community garden coordinator with Interior Community Services, will be on site with coffee and donuts for volunteers. He will be able to answer questions on getting a garden plot.

The MPNA is building accessible garden beds for seniors and those with physical disabilities who may not be able to reach low gardening beds.

“We’re one of the only community gardens that currently doesn’t have these types of raised boxes available,” says MPNA director Sarah Johnstone.

“We’d love to see more community members have the opportunity to garden here regardless of age or physical ability.”

Later this spring, more improvements will come to McDonald Park.

The outdated information stand adjacent to the gardens will be transformed into a free produce stand to help combat food insecurity and waste. The MPNA said this will provide a barrier free food resource for anyone to take what they need for free.

“We’re hoping this stand will not only provide fresh produce for seniors, families, and individuals living in our neighbourhood, but also reduce vandalism in the community garden from those who may have broken in because they need a free food source,” says Johnstone.

The garden will also see the addition of decorative fencing with bid nesting boxes from Wild Birds Unlimited, and a compost bin mural from local muralist Kelly Wright.
