COLLINS: So many conflicting messages about COVID-19

Apr 10, 2022 | 6:39 AM

CHILDREN STARTED BACK TO SCHOOL in District 73 this week, as their parents try to sort out what’s happening with COVID.

It is information overload of the highest level.

As Premier Horgan announced he’s been diagnosed with COVID, mandates regarding the spread of the illness are largely gone.

I will still be wearing my mask to a large degree. It’s funny, I suppose, that I would see people in other parts of the world wearing masks to protect themselves from air pollution and I would think, “Hey, you don’t have to wear those here. This is Canada!”

But after COVID, I have changed my thinking. I have learned from them the importance of those masks.

Despite my concerns about the illness, I must say it is nice to drive downtown and see increased foot traffic, stores getting a little busier, mall parking lots filling up again, and the announcement that events like Music in the Park, Canada Day, the Kamloopa Pow Wow, outdoor sports, etc., are set to return. My grandchild Gray is at a soccer tourney in Hope this weekend, WCT is back to full houses, as is the KSO.

Despite this good news, our health officials continue to tell us to be vigilant.

The premier said, quite succinctly, “This is not over.”

There are rising numbers of cases in some parts of the country even as mandates are being lifted, yet another wave is about to hit us and the B.C. government is already rolling out another round of boosters for the elderly and the immunocompromised.

The changes in the way cases are counted and reported are “problematic” according to some experts.

Dr. Tera Moriarty is an infectious disease expert at the University of Toronto. Moriarty, quoted in the Vancouver Sun this week, says there’s a good likelihood B.C. is going to see a big fat wave soon and the loss of daily reporting means people are not going to be aware of what is happening.

It’s like the government is saying “We’ve done all we can. Now it’s up to you.”

Let’s hope we’re up to that challenge.
