COLLINS: Kamloops mayoralty race getting crowded

Apr 8, 2022 | 5:00 AM

I HOPE THERE ARE NOT MANY MORE candidates coming forward to seek the mayor’s chair in the next civic election.

Healthy competition is good, but if the races get crowded, it can be counterproductive.

Aside from losing a really good mayor, we will lose at least one, or both, members of council who want to follow his footsteps.

Both Arjun Singh and Dieter Dudy have my respect, but at least one of them won’t be around after the October election.

And all of this is presuming that no other members of council decide to run. Some are qualified but I just don’t think it’s their time.

I would dearly love John O’Fee to run, but I think he’s happy where he is on school board.

Who else might run? Hard to say.

Assuming that we’re about done with mayoralty candidates, we’ll soon start to see aldermanic wannabees come forward.

That’s when it will become really interesting.

Who will run for Ray Dhaliwal’s Action22 party?

Or Kamloops Voters For Change, whose social media posts have largely centred on vitriolic attacks on the current council, the Community Service Office and a perception that enough isn’t being done to clean up the drug and homeless problem in core areas of the city. And, oh yes, that we’re the worst city in the entire world.

Frankly, they remind me a lot of the pro-Trump spin prior to January 6th, 2021. And I have little respect for those kinds of comments.

I think there are some valid points in their rhetoric, but when coupled with some of the drivel that goes along with it, those nuggets are hard to find.

At the end of the day, we’ll hopefully be able to find out whether they actually have ideas that make sense, or are just making noise.

An interesting few months ahead folks.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
