Local MP criticizes federal budget, housing affordability payment

OTTAWA — Central Okanagan–Similkameen–Nicola Conservative MP Dan Albas says this year’s federal budget won’t do any favours specifically for the younger population.

Albas says the announcement Thursday (Apr. 7) of a one-time, $500 payment to people facing housing affordability challenges won’t actually help them purchase a property.

“Many of these measures they sound really good when they put them out, they sound very compassionate when they say that they know the angst that young people are going through but it doesn’t tangibly make it possible for something to get in a home so these new measures they won’t build a home and they won’t allow someone to buy into their own home.”

Albas also believes home prices have doubled since 2015 because the first-time home-buyers tax credit was raised from $750 to $1500.

He adds that he’s concerned about the Liberals’ excessive spending at a time when the Bank of Canada is raising interest rates to slow down inflation.

“Mr. Trudeau used to say to people that he was there to help those in the middle class and those working to join it. Nothing hurts our economy, especially those that are vulnerable and those that are working to join the middle class than inflation because each paycheque they get less and less and their purchasing power goes less and less at the stores.”

Albas addressed seniors that are on a fixed income have concerns and bills piling up.

“Right now your concern is rising gas prices, food prices, if you’re in a rental you’re worried about being kicked out and where you would go if that happened, this budget does absolutely nothing.”
