SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — A Kamloops hockey player is joining his brother in Saskatchewan.

The Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League (WHL) announced Thursday (April 7) that they’ve signed 2005-born defenceman Sam Ward to a standard player agreement. Sam’s older brother Mathew, a 2004-born forward, leads the Broncos in scoring with 56 points (22 goals and 24 assists) in 62 games.

Sam spent his 2021-22 season playing alongside his older brother Ben with the Merritt Centennials in the British Columbia Hockey League. Sam scored nine points (three goals and six assists) in 37 games.

“Sam is a really intelligent puck mover that skates well, makes plays and has some offensive upside,” Chad Leslie, Broncos general manager says. “He is a high-character kid who will fit in really well with our young group.”
