Kamloops RCMP arrest downtown driver after slow motion evasion attempt

KAMLOOPS — RCMP arrested a driver after a low-speed-but-erratic jaunt through downtown Kamloops Wednesday morning (Apr. 6).

In a news release, spokesperson Cst. Crystal Evelyn says the incident began at about 6:20 a.m. when an officer came across the driver of a grey Toyota running a stop sign and turning into the RCMP vehicle’s path.

Evelyn says the officer recognized the driver and tried to conduct a traffic stop but the driver turned the wrong way down Seymour Street and continued on at a slow speed.

Officers tried to block in the suspected impaired driver, but he mounted a curb to avoid the obstacle before driving away slowly.

As the morning commute was about to get busy, Mounties decided to break off efforts to stop the vehicle in the interest of public safety.

An off-duty officer saw the vehicle a short time later as it hit a light standard and a building near Third Avenue and Lansdowne Street before stopping on the road.

Mounties blocked off public traffic and surrounded the vehicle, with the driver appearing to be trying to get it rolling again.

“The man resisted arrest, was screaming, sweating, and found to be possession of suspected fentanyl,” said Evelyn. “Concerned he was experiencing excited delirium, officers transported the man to the hospital for assessment, to be returned to police custody following any required medical treatment.”

The man is facing a series of charges. If anyone has any further information for RCMP, they are asked to call (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2022-11053.
