KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers came back and beat the Prince George Cougars 4-3 in overtime in their final road game of the 2021-22 Western Hockey League (WHL) season Sunday (April 3) afternoon.

After trailing 2-0 early in the first period, Logan Stankoven put back a rebound to get the Blazers on the board, but the Cougars escaped with a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes following a late tip-in on the power play.

The Blazers turned up the heat in the second period. They outshot the Cougars 16-5 in the middle frame and outscored them 2-0 – an Ethan Brandwood point shot and a Reese Belton snapshot – to tie it 3-3.

Kamloops were outshot 13-9 in the third period, but guaranteed a point by sending it to overtime. Daylan Kuefler put the puck into a wide-open net on the power play 56 seconds into overtime to give the Blazers the second point.

The Blazers improve to 46-16-2 on the 2021-22 WHL season, good for 94 points in 64 games. They’ve clinched the B.C. Division, guaranteeing them at least the second seed in the Western Conference, but they trail the Everett Silvertips by three points for first in the conference with four games remaining.

Next up is a Friday (April 8) night home game against the Victoria Royals. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. from Sandman Centre.
