THOMPSON-NICOLA REGION — The Thompson Nicola Regional Library (TNRL) is teaming up with FireSmart BC to teach kids about wildfire safety and resiliency.

They’re doing it with the help of FireSmart’s new mascot, Ember.

“As a fox, Ember personifies alertness, adaptability, intelligence, and community mindedness. She encourages us all to do the same,” said the TNRL in a press release.

In April, the TNRL is holding a colouring contest. Anyone aged 12 and under can enter the contest by picking up a colouring page at any TNRL branch and showing a completed colouring page to staff at the library desk. Each branch will have an Ember plush toy to give away as the monthly draw prize.

In May, kids can take home an activity booklet from a branch. The package includes colouring, crayons, a sticker and magnet and information on making your home FireSmart.

In June, the TNRL will lend out Wildfire Resiliency Literacy Kits designed for children aged three to eight. The TNRL said that the kit is designed to help kids cope with the “mental and emotional stress” of wildfires.
