Road reopens after train derailment cuts off access to airport via Ord Road

UPDATE (3:00 p.m.): Kamloops RCMP say traffic is now moving in both directions on Tranquille Road near Airport Road. Crews are still completing some work but the road has reopened.

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS — If you’re heading to the Kamloops Airport this morning, plan ahead: one major route to the airport is currently closed.

The City of Kamloops said in a tweet Saturday (April 2) afternoon that there is no apparent concern for public safety after a train derailed near the airport.

“We are aware of a train derailment incident involving 5 railcars that occurred on the CN Rail tracks near the airport early this morning,” reads the tweet.

Ord Road is unaffected but access to the airport via Ord Road is currently not possible. The only access to the airport currently is via Tranquille Road.

Kamloops RCMP had said earlier in a press release Saturday (April 2) morning that due to a mechanical issue with a train, Tranquille Road just north of Airport Road and south of Ord Road would be closed temporarily.

Kamloop Fire Rescue and City staff are attending the scene.

RCMP say another update will be provided once the road is clear.
