Sicamous meeting to inform residents of landslide warning system

Mar 31, 2022 | 11:29 AM

SICAMOUS, B.C. — The District of Sicamous will hold a Two Mile Community Meeting to inform residents of a new system designed to provide warnings of possible landslides.

The early warning system is being implemented to reduce the risk to the public from post-wildfire landslides in the Wiseman Creek area.

The meeting will go over how the system works; what it means for residents in the area; and an action plan moving forward into spring flooding from heavy rain and snowmelt.

There will also be an opportunity for residents to ask questions during the meeting.

The Two Mile Community Meeting will be held at the Sicamous Seniors Centre at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

The meeting will also be available virtually through Zoom.

The early warning system is a software program designed to use weather forecasting data to determine whether an evacuation alert or order should be issued for a specific area.

It’s being funded through a $30,000 provincial grant after a geotechnical study determined that damage caused to the landscape from the Two Mile Road wildfire last summer made the slopes above the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park unstable and a risk of landslides.
