Police seeking information after man’s body found in North Thompson River

KAMLOOPS — Police say a body spotted in the North Thompson River yesterday (Mar. 29) has now been identified as a man, and an investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing.

RCMP were called to an area in the 4300-block of Weststyde Road around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon for a report of what appeared to be a body floating in the river.

Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet with RCMP’s E Division says more resources were called in, and around 4 p.m, the deceased person was pulled from the river.

“An RCMP dive team member was deployed to assist in the investigation and went to recovery that person’s body, who at that time had not been identified as a man but has since been identified as a deceased man,” states Shoihet.

Other details about the man’s identity are not available yet, and RCMP and the BC Coroners Services are continuing their investigations into what happened. Shoihet also notes it’s too early to confirm what led to the man’s death, or whether criminality is involved.

“If you have information about a person who has been missing or you’re missing a loved one and you haven’t reported that to police it is important that you do that,” Shoihet says, “But otherwise, the scene has been released and you’re free to go back to that area.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP detachment at 250-828-3000.
