KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers will host their annual Indigenous night Wednesday (March 30) wearing specialty jerseys designed by local Indigenous artists.

Laura and Emma Saul, part of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, designed a jersey featuring a coyote and a bear.

“Both have markings similar to that of the Blazers with Coyote’s tail the flame in the Blazer ‘B’,” said Laura Saul.

The design also features Mt. Peter and Mt. Paul, in a nod to the tale of how the two mountains were formed.

“The Mountains … were formed by Coyote fishing up two large piles of salmon for himself and covering them up to hide from Bear. It worked the first time, forming Mt. Paul, but the second, larger one, Mt. Peter, was too much to hide from keen Bear,” reads the description.

A ceremony will be held before the game against the Prince George Cougars to commemorate the occasion. The jerseys will be auctioned online with the proceeds going to a charity chosen by TteS.

The Blazers are also selling t-shirts with the design in the Blazers Corner Store at the game on Wednesday. Five dollars from each shirt will go to the charity.
