COLLINS: Propaganda in Kamloops municipal race heats up

Mar 25, 2022 | 10:31 AM

AS PROPAGANDA HEATS UP ahead of October’s municipal election, it’s always disturbing to me to see how much crap is thrown out at current council members. Some of the concerns may have some relevance but most seem to be simply statements designed to disparage the work of current council members.

These are the opening lines from Action 22’s Facebook page:

“Welcome to Action 22 Kamloops. Throughout these next few months, you will hear us speak about transparency, accountability, better communication and the need for a change in leadership at city hall. These are challenging times for the city of Kamloops. The Covid-19 pandemic has presented challenges for everyone, and municipal governments are certainly no exception. We are concerned for our futures; the cost of living is on the rise, we worry about our jobs, families, and safety. In these uncertain times, we expect our leaders to communicate, keep spending and taxes under control, take a proactive approach to crime and street-level drug addiction, plan for the changing landscape, provide stability, and protect the services we count on.”

So right off the bat, you see that this group, headed by businessman Ray Dhaliwal, is of the opinion that 1) Change is necessary, 2) We aren’t communicating very well, and 3) we aren’t transparent.

As you read further through their statement, you can infer many other concerns.

All of the things mentioned are of concern to taxpayers. And perhaps they will be able to point out some examples to us. But to blatantly suggest that this council is not transparent, is not trying to keep spending down, is not trying to plan for the future, is not trying to deal with the homeless, and is not trying to engage the public, is a slap in the face to a group who are putting in yeoman’s service.

Here’s another line that bothers me: “Now is not the time to stay the course of failed policies and broken promises, now is the time to expect and do better. “

I trust that, at some point, this group will provide more information to support their allegations.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
