TRU WolfPack volleyballer Muzyka plans fundraiser run for home country Ukraine

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Volleyball team has strong ties to Ukraine. Several athletes have come from that country to suit up with the ‘Pack, including graduating setter Anastasiia Muzyka.

“That was my main reason to go to TRU – they already had two girls on the team from Ukraine,” Muzyka explains. “I was so scared coming to Canada, having zero English. That was my connection — the two girls — and it helped me get comfortable.”

Next week, Muzyka plans to run 44 kilometres — symbolic of Ukraine’s 44 million citizens — in partnership with the Red Cross, as a fundraiser for her home country. Her volleyball teammates plan to join her on the run. She’s hoping members of the community choose to do so, as well.

“We’re inviting people to come and run with us and show their support this way. If you can’t run, you can donate… Any money will help, even if it’s one dollar, it will help. In Ukraine they have this saying that ‘cent to cent will help’ and if every person here in Canada would donate one cent, it would be a lot of money.”

Muzyka was inspired to take on this challenge by UNBC Basketball player Vova Pluzhnikov, who is from Kharkiv. Click here to visit the Red Cross donation page for Anastasiia’s Run for Ukraine.
