KAMLOOPS — Ten kids up to the age of 12 are spending their spring breaks at the Big Little Science Centre in Downtown Kamloops.

“We are pretty much doing science mania, all week long, different forms of science,” said Susan Hammond, operator at the Big Little Science Centre.

After a few years of limited in-person spring break experiences they’re excited to be back doing hands-on experiments with other kids.

“We do explosions with different kinds of chemicals. We make art, like rainbow art,” said participant Sunum Sall.

“It’s really fun and it’s interesting because you can do different projects and learn more facts,” said Sahibah Sall, another participant.

Kids are also spending their spring break at the BC Wildlife Park. Each day has a different theme, like salmon or insects, and Tuesday (March 22) they were learning the difference between a turtle and a tortoise.

The group got to have what the BC Wildlife Park calls an “animal encounter”: they spend time with one of the park’s rescue animals.

“I like being with other kids and learning about wildlife,” said Asher Queen, one of the kids taking part.

“I really liked learning about the turtles and tortoises. I learned a lot of stuff I didn’t know,” said Will Queen, another participant.

Then, they explore the other animals in the park, like bison, bears and deer.

Sylive Lloyd is an education leader at BC Wildlife Park. She said the students seem happy to be back in relative normalcy.

“They seem a little bit more open than they were when we were doing stuff with COVID, where we had to follow all the rules and stuff,” said Lloyd.

“We can see each other’s face again — it feels a little more friendly and easier to connect right off the start,” said Lloyd.

The BC Wildlife Park said they still have some spots open in their day camps toward the end of the week.
