Supply chain problems led to road line paint shortage in 2021: City of Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — If you think the road lines in Kamloops are lighter than usual for this time of year, you’re right.

Civic Operations Director Jen Fretz says the City of Kamloops was only able to paint road lines once in 2021 due to a scarcity of paint from its supplier. Normally, the City paints the lines twice every year.

“Last year, as you know, we were in a situation where line-marking paint was extremely hard to come by and, therefore, we were only able to paint once last season,” Fretz told council at its regular meeting Tuesday (Mar. 15).

“This year, we are ready to go for April and intend to paint twice — which is what we’ve done in years past — in the hopes that things will last a whole longer than they have this past year.”

Fretz says the pandemic-related supply shortage that led to the single coat in 2021 could be a harbinger of things to come for her department.

“We’ve seen extreme price increases in pipe, for example, for our water and sewer systems — in the order of 150-to-200 per cent more than what we saw before. (Road-marking) paint is a great example from last year. We were almost not able to get the paint. These things that we’ve taken for granted because they’ve been easy to get are the things that are quite concerning.”
