SOUND OFF: Mask on – Mask off

TO LOOSELY PARAPHRASE A COMMOND from Mr. Miyagi in “The Karate Kid”, how many people will just cast their masks aside now that the masking mandate has been lifted.

On Friday, B.C.lifted a lot of restrictions and I’m sure many were jumping for joy. But have we seen enough of a drop in cases to dump the mandate? That remains to be seen.

Some restrictions will be kept in place for a few weeks yet, in other places like doctors’ offices, the mask mandate will stay in place. And businesses will be able to set their own policies, and some have already said they will continue to have a mask policy in place for a bit longer.

While driving downtown Friday afternoon, many people had discarded their masks and it was nice to see smiling faces again.

But I, for one, will continue to wear my mask in indoor settings.

Though statistics show the omicron variant isn’t as serious as some of the earlier strains, I feel safer with the mask on, for now at least.

Earlier in the week, Dr. Bonnie Henry told us COVID will likely be with us for years to come. So for me, I will be the “mask on” guy, and others will have to take care of the other side of the equation.

If you want to take your mask off, your call.

I hate wearing the mask, but if it gives me some added protection, I’ll make the sacrifice.

And there are many who would tell you my face looks better with the mask on anyway.
