Kamloops RCMP receiving complaints of drilled gas tanks and stolen fuel

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are asking the public to be on the lookout for suspects, following recent reports of fuel thefts targeting pickup trucks.

RCMP say they’ve received at least four mischief and theft complaints from pickup truck owners over the past two weeks who had their gas tanks drilled and fuel stolen.

Vehicles on the 1200-block of Rogers Way and 1300-block of Hugh Allan Drive were targeted on Feb, 27 and 28, while trucks on the 1400-block of Pearson Place and 2000-block of West Trans Canada Highway were drilled and drained on Monday (March 7) and Tuesday (March 8).

“Whoever is responsible for these thefts is not just stealing gas but creating a whole string of expenses far greater than the price of the fuel they’re making off with,” Cst. Crystal Evelyn says. “It’s really important for people to be good neighbours and watch for any suspicious activity in their communities. If you see something suspicious, please call police, but also try to capture as much information about the suspects as possible, such as their license plate or description.”

RCMP encourage drivers to park in a secured, well-lit area – such as a garage or fenced enclosure – and to avoid parking on dark and isolated areas on the street. Residents are encouraged to be mindful of the smell and presence of gasoline when returning to their vehicle. Police add that a locking gas cap could help keep fuel safe from vehicles that sit closer to the ground.
