KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is scrapping a planned second phase of the Hillside Drive extension.

The first phase of the extension, connecting McGill Road behind the Thompson Rivers University campus to the Summit Connector at Guerin Creek, was completed in 2009.

A second phase was included in the City’s Transportation Master Plan that would have connected Hillside Drive to the first phase, behind the McGill Road industrial area.

In his annual report delivered to Kamloops council Tuesday (Mar. 9), Development, Engineering and Sustainability Director Marvin Kwiatkowski noted a concept for a second crossing of the Thompson River has been moved further west from Singh Street, closer to Kamloops Airport.

Kwiatkowski says that is a major reason why the second phase of the Hillside extension is no longer being considered.

“We’ve done some modelling and, with the change of the Singh Street bridge not in that location, we don’t see a need for that (Hillside) project. We have a lot of other projects that we’re looking to put on the list.”
