Merritt RCMP notices rise in break-ins at Phase Four boundary

MERRITT, B.C. — Since the Coldwater River flooded in mid-November, RCMP say they’ve seen a rise in break-and-enter reports to vacant homes in the Phase Four area of Merritt.

Police say some of the break-ins may not have happened if crime prevention methods had been used.

“We recognize the frustration of homeowners in the Phase Four area that have experienced break ins to their properties,” said Sgt. Josh Roda. “We want to encourage homeowners to use crime prevention methods to deter thieves from targeting their vacant homes. Please be assured we are out patrolling daily but cannot be everywhere at once.”

Tips to deter thieves includes:

  • locking all doors and windows, and closing gates on walkways
  • leaving indoor lights on, or placing lights on timers, to make their residence look occupied
  • leaving outdoor lights on and using motion lights
  • keeping shrubs and bushes trimmed
  • securing valuable items that would be left outside, such as barbecues, lawnmowers, and tools
  • installing a security system and cameras

Anyone whose property has been stolen by thieves are asked to not touch or move anything, and call Merritt RCMP at (250) 378-4262.
